Roundtable at the Blanton Museum

I’m co-hosting a roundtable at the Blanton Museum this Saturday, April 24 at 2pm. The title is Museum as Interface, and it compliments our Robot Pedagogue installation. We will be joined by Bruce Porter, chair of the UT computer science department who specializes in artificial intelligence; Maria Esteva, a archival and library systems expert; and Justin Hodgson, an education and media theorist. Robot Pedagogue at the Blanton Museum, Austin

Robot Pedagogue is a Processing installation on 5 computers at the Blanton Museum, in Austin, TX. It’s a collaboration with experimental design group Ex-Corporation and a part of Anna Craycroft’s show Subject of Learning/Object of Study. It’s on view until June 20th. There’s a video here.

Word Association Visualization

I just finished this little web app. It uses the same word-association dataset I’ve been obsessed with for the past year. Enter words, and it will produce an image showing the connections between your input and other connected words.

Here is some sample input from actual users:

Font Averaging

In an effort to get at the essence of font-design, I averaged all the fonts on my computer and got this:

I did it in Flash. Originally I was going to use Processing, but its font handling is clunky. (Flash, I later discovered, has its own rendering issues. Next time I’ll try Open Frameworks). Here are two embedded apps that average web-safe fonts:
